- Since the middle of 1960s – institute has been involved in studying the problems of explosion utilization for welding and related technologies.
- 1963 – institute carried out investigations on welding in space
- 1965 – processes of alternating current plasma arc welding and pulsed microplasma welding were developed. These processes were used for welding of aluminum cases.
- 1966 – in-tube machine for automatic resistance butt welding of big-diameter pipes was developed.
- 1967 – alternating current plasma-arc welding was used for welding of external aluminum tanks of the space rockets.
- 1969 – developed method of “wet” mechanized underwater welding was applied in welding of a high-pressure pipeline at a depth of 10 m (bottom of the Dnieper river, Dnipropetrovsk city)
- In 1970- 1990 – this technology was developed and used for a repair of hulls of the ships afloat, construction of the sea piers, port buildings and offshore drilling platforms. Welding of stainless steel and titanium alloys using “VULKAN” device, assembled on board of the “Souz-6” spaceship, was carried out under the conditions of space vacuum and zero gravity.
- 1979 – special device “ISPARITEL” was tested on board of the “Salut-6” orbital station for the purpose of investigation of thermal evaporation and condensation of materials in space. The concept of depositing of thin-film coatings under the conditions of orbital flight was verified.
- 1984 – welding, cutting and depositing in the open space with the help of versatile electron-beam tool.
- In 1980-1990 – welded transformable structures, deployable in the open space was developed.
- 2020 – A world famous scientist and outstanding science policy maker Academician Borys Paton, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of NAS of Ukraine, died on 19 August
- 1934 – The Electric Welding Institute was founded on initiative of academician Evgeny Oscarovich Paton, headed Institute up to 1953.
- 1939 – automatic submerged arc welding, welding flux and heads for automatic welding were developed.
- 1940 –the first monography on automatic submerged arc welding, written by academician E. O. Paton, was published.
- 1941 – technology for automatic submerged arc welding of armor steels was developed. This was the beginning of high-speed automatic welding of tanks.
- 1942 – first in the world the allwelded tank was manufactured using the method of automatic submerged arc welding. Thanks to developed high-speed automatic welding in the period of World War Two USSR manufactured more tanks than all other taken together countries were at war.
- 1944 – technology for a manufacture of heavy sheet structures by coil rolling method using submerged arc welding was proposed. Thanks to application of coil rolling method all the oil tanks, destroyed during the World War II, were restored in the shortest time.
- 1947 – technology of multiarc high-speed welding of large-diameter pipes were developed.
- 1949 – automatic welding of vertical and horizontal welds of mantle of the blast furnace were performed by technology, developed in 1948.
- 1951 – technology and equipment for electroslag welding (ESW) of metal up to 2000 mm thickness were used for a manufacture of the powerful water turbines (as for Assouan hydroelectric power station, Egypt) and presses (as for France, at photo on the right).
- 1952 – electroslag remelting (ERM) of steel was developed. Beginning of the electroslag technologies. Machine for butt welding with annular transformer was also developed. CO2 – welding was developed (in cooperation with Central Research Institute of Machine Building, Moscow, Russia). CO2 welding allowed mechanizing the manufacture of steel structures in shipbuilding and thin-sheet metal structures in automotive industry etc.
- 1953 – the biggest in Europe allwelded bridge across the Dnieper River, which was named after E. O. Paton, was put in operation in Kiev. 98% of all welds, including vertical ones, were performed using automatic submerged-arc welding. In the period of 1950-1960 a number of different building and structures in chemical industry and hydropower engineering was erected using the technologies which were developed in the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute.
- 1956 – pilot machine for electroslag remelting was created.
- 1957 – plasma-arc remelting discovered a new direction in special electrometallurgy. Machine for plasma-arc remelting of rim zones of the ingots was developed.
- 1958 – Machine for continuous resistance butt welding of thick-walled pipes and rails was developed. System of equipment, based on K-900 type rail-welding machine for welding of long rails. Case of a high-power diesel engine for the locomotive, was manufactured with the help of resistance butt welding.
