Department of Plasma-Slag Metallurgy

The Department has unique metallurgical equipment to perform technological research
and pilot production of metals and alloys, in particular:
– plasma-arc unit OB-1957 for surface melting and refining of the ingot surface;
– plasma-arc furnace UPP-3 for refining remelting;
– plasma-arc installation OP-133 for producing rapidly-quenched strip and flakes;
– facility for testing super-powerful plasmatrons;
– plasma-induction unit UP-20 for growing large single-crystals of refractory metals;
– installation for chamber electroslag remelting of highly reactive metals under the impact
of external magnetic fields in a controlled atmosphere;
– installation for electroslag welding of metals and alloys;
– installation for electroslag remelting based on A-550 unit;
– electroslag crucible furnace based on A-550 unit for processing industrial wastes of
various metals and metal-containing materials;
– installation for induction melting of metals and alloys in a sectional mould.
